The Town of Stephenville is located in scenic Bay St. George. It has a sound economic infrastructure based on longtime commercial interests and industries. It has a 42-bed hospital, a thriving education system including the Provincial Headquarters of the College of the North Atlantic, and a multitude of recreational facilities and activities. Since its beginning in May of 1844, Stephenville has grown significantly. The first census report in 1844 cited 103 inhabitants in the area. The 2021 official Census Canada population was 6,540 and is the service centre for an area of approximately 25,000. Stephenville has grown into an efficient and vibrant community. It is the second largest community on Newfoundland’s west coast. It provides an exceptional quality of life and has a high level of industrial activity.

Stephenville is hiring the newly created position of Director of Engineering and Asset Management and is inviting anyone with a passion for local government and a desire to improve the lives of residents and encourage economic growth to apply. Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer and as a pivotal member of the senior management team, you will provide leadership and engineering related advice to all Town Departments, and Council, when requested.

 

You will lead a team of senior managers and employees. You are driven to deliver excellence, focusing on quality improvement, innovation, and service modernization in accordance with regulatory and compliance requirements and inspiring workers to be innovative by keeping current on emerging technologies and developments in the provision of municipal services.

 

The ideal candidate will foster a results-oriented work ethic, and ability to work independently to produce quality work and recommendations within tight timelines. They will have:

    • Bachelor of Science in Engineering Degree
    • Professional Engineer designation or eligible for membership in the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL)
    • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively advancing experience, preferably in a municipal or union environment.
    • Knowledge and experience in design, construction, and maintenance of municipal infrastructure including roadways, sanitary and storm sewer collection systems, and water distributions systems.
    • Strong skills in GIS and AutoCAD. Skills in modelling and design software will be considered an asset.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including interacting with the public, confidently through phone, email or in person.
    • Able to work irregular hours and to travel when required.
    • Must have a valid Newfoundland and Labrador Driver’s License.
    • Other qualities required includes a proven reputation for building and leading strong teams, and empowering staff in the delivery of superior services.

Given the nature of this position and the need to respond to municipal issues in a timely manner when required, preference will be given to qualified candidates who reside in or are willing to relocate to Stephenville.
