***NEW*** Join us as Randy Herrmann, P. Eng., FEC, facilitates a session on, "Decolonizing Engineering " Tuesday, September 16, 2025, 12:00-2:00 PM NST. This session is being held virtually through Zoom (Zoom meeting details have been sent to all members).

Randy is an engineer and the Director of the Engineering Access Program (ENGAP) in the Faculty of Engineering, University of Manitoba. ENGAP is a successful program in Canada, graduating hundreds of Indigenous students into the world of engineering.

This session will discuss the historic and contemporary role engineering has played in Indigenous communities and how we as engineers can move forward in a spirit of reconciliation. The session will talk about what exactly is meant by decolonization and why we need to address this issue. In order to better understand this role, we will look at some contemporary engineering issues in Indigenous communities and review some traditional Indigenous design. The session will also talk about United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and how that might affect engineering projects in the future.

Geoscientists Canada has refreshed the publication Geoscience and Canada – Understanding Our Earth: The vital role of Canada’s geoscientists. Geoscience is the study of the structure and history of our planet and its natural systems. Human life and progress are underpinned by materials provided by the Earth and geoscience provides us with the knowledge and understanding to find resources and utilise the Earth sustainably, for the benefit of current and future generations. The Earth is changing through natural processes and human actions. This publication explores how Canadian geoscientists recognise, document, and interpret these processes and changes, particularly the gradual changes that take place over thousands to millions of years, as they help society find and manage Earth’s resources for the present and future.
