***NEW*** Philip Helwig, P. Eng. (Retired) a former coordinator at MUN Engineering, is leading a Third Generation Project. The aim is to connect with members of third generation MUN B. Eng. graduates, who have a parent and grandparent who also graduated from MUN Co-op Engineering. ***NEW*** Engineers Canada is conducting a national survey of engineering culture. In engineering workplaces, engineering culture affects workplace experiences, professional judgment, and ultimately the engineering profession's ability to protect the public. Engineers Canada is developing a national survey of engineering culture to better understand and measure the conditions that support strong engineering practice and help identify where the profession is succeeding, where challenges exist, and where opportunities for improvement may lie. ***NEW*** Equiforce is building an Industry Advisory Committee for FastTrackHER Energy - a workforce readiness program designed to help women explore careers in Newfoundland and Labrador's energy sector, gain sector-relevant certifications, and connect directly with employers.

As a committee member, you'll help:
▪️ Identify in-demand occupations, competencies, and certifications
▪️ Review and validate curriculum and delivery plans
▪️ Assess pilot outcomes and recommend next steps

ENERGY STAR® certification for Buildings in Canada. Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) recognizes the most energy efficient commercial and institutional buildings in Canada with ENERGY STAR® certification. NRCan certifies Canadian buildings whose energy performance is amongst the top 25 percentile of similar buildings nationwide. To qualify for ENERGY STAR certification, the building must benchmark their energy performance using ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager®, earn a 1-100 ENERGY STAR score of at least 75 and have a Professional Engineer or Registered Architect verify the application.

As energy benchmarking becomes standard practice in the building sector, many Canadian Professional Engineers and Registered Architects are already providing their clients with this. ENERGY STAR® is encouraging others to join the movement!

The role of the Professional Engineers and Registered Architects is to verify that all energy use is accounted for accurately, that property characteristics were properly reported and that indoor environmental quality has not been compromised in pursuit of energy reductions. Understanding the roles and requirements for verifying ENERGY STAR Certification applications can be found in the Canadian Licensed Professional’s Guide.

Portfolio Manager is a free, bilingual, tool tailored for Canadians and used for benchmarking energy, greenhouse gas emissions, water and waste in buildings. Used by tens of thousands of Canadian building owners and operators, this secure online platform allows users to monitor, rate and optimize their energy performance.

The result: The building could reduce operation costs, increase asset value, contribute fewer greenhouse gas emissions, increase rental and occupancy rates, and gain ENERGY STAR recognition. Professional Engineers and Registered Architects could help their clients better understand the energy performance of their buildings, help identify more targeted energy savings opportunities and add a new stream of revenue to their business.

PEGNL is looking for experienced professionals to help review the experience of those applying for licensure by serving as Volunteer Assessors in the Competency Based Assessment (CBA) framework. While all areas of expertise are welcome, we are looking for additional assessors with experience in mechanical engineering, process engineering and chemical engineering. If you have been licensed for at least 5 years and are interested in learning more about becoming an assessor, please apply on our website.

The IEEE Newfoundland and Labrador Section, in partnership with Memorial University of Newfoundland, presents The 34th Annual Newfoundland Electrical and Computer Engineering Conference on November 12, 2026. A forum where professionals in electrical, electronic and computer engineering as well as information technologies can present their work to the growing technical community within the province. NECEC 2026 will focus on technical concepts, innovations and implementations.

This is a valuable opportunity for industry teams to present their work in a recognized conference setting, highlight current projects and innovations, and connect with researchers, students, and professionals across Newfoundland and Labrador. Relevant topics include artificial intelligence, data science, machine learning, software and computing, signal and image processing, control and robotics, ocean engineering, power and alternative energy, remote sensing, privacy and security, communications, biomedical engineering, and other ECE-related areas. Registration is open for the Adaptation Canada 2026 conference to be held in Toronto September 22 to 24, 2026, which will bring together over 1,000 practitioners from diverse Canadian sectors and communities to exchange ideas, share solutions, and drive Canada’s climate resilience efforts. The Project Management Institute Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter Annual Symposium and Silver Anniversary Gala will be held September 16 and 17, respectively.
